USTR Tai visits New Delhi and attends US-India Trade Policy Forum meeting

Indian Trade and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal yesterday met with US Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai, who is on a two-day visit to India. “The commercial relationship between our two countries is a priority, both for the president [Joe] Biden and for me. That’s why it was important for me to come to India and revive the Trade Policy Forum on my first trip to Asia, ”Tai said at a welcome reception.

Tai is joined by USTR MP Sarah Bianchi. This is Tai’s first visit to India since taking office in March of this year.

Both participate in the US-India Trade Policy Forum (TPF). Bianchi will also participate in a panel discussion on the digital commerce industry.

Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal met with US Trade Representative Katherine Tai in New Delhi yesterday. “The commercial relationship between our two countries is a priority, both for the president [Joe] Biden and for me. That’s why it was important for me to come to India and revive the Trade Policy Forum on my first trip to Asia, ”Tai said at a welcome reception.

“There is enormous potential for growth between our two economies in areas like the digital economy, services, health-related trade and even agriculture. I believe that a revived TPF can help our trade relationship keep pace with other important aspects of the US-India partnership. But it is clear that bilateral trade is not living up to its potential, ”Tai said during the reception.

“I also look forward to discussing how further collaboration on worker-centered policies can benefit our trade relationship,” she added.

Calling the visit of a senior US trade official to India “very important,” US-India Business Council Chairman Nisha Biswal said it was a pivotal visit to see how the two countries can align their ambitions and their approach to commerce.
