KUALA LUMPUR, March 28 – The Federal Ministry of Lands has set up a poverty alleviation unit at ministry and agency level to continuously tackle the problem of urban poverty, the Dewan learned today Negara.

His Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias ​​said that for the Federal Territory of Labuan, the unit was established under the Labuan Corporation in addition to working with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP ) by creating a working group.

“This poverty unit is a new unit that we have created to achieve the goal of poverty eradication and the creation of a task force to prepare supplies of essentials before the festive season with the support of government agencies and selected wholesalers or stores.

“We hope that all the efforts planned and implemented can help solve the problems related to poverty in the federal territory of Labuan, especially the urban poor due to the rising cost of living,” he said. he said during a question-and-answer session at the Dewan Negara. today.

He said this in his response to a question from Senator Datuk Bashir Alias ​​who wanted to know the mechanism planned by the ministry to fight poverty in Labuan, especially the urban poor due to the rising cost of living. .

Apart from this, Jalaluddin said the ministry will reactivate the Labuan Federal Territory Physical and Economic Development Working Committee (JKPFEWPL) to deal with current and related issues including the rising cost of living on the island. without taxes.

Responding to a further question from Senator Muhammad Zahid Md Arip on whether the poverty unit could work with the zakat collection center to address urban poverty among Muslims, Jalaluddin said that the two units had the same goal.

“We have similar goals. This poverty unit is to help not only Malay Muslims but also other races and ethnicities. Our goal is the same which is to help the B40 and below group overcome poverty.

“Apart from that, I expect the combination of these two elements to maximize assistance and solve the poverty that our society is currently facing,” he said. — Bernama
