Crapo statement at the nomination hearing

November 16, 2021

Washington DC–U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), a senior member of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, made the following remarks during a hearing to consider the appointments of Maria Lago as Under Secretary for International Trade and Lisa Wang as Assistant Secretary for Enforcement and Compliance at the Ministry of Commerce.

The text of the Crapo Ranking Member’s remarks, as prepared, can be found below.

“Thank you, Senator Wyden.

“Welcome Ms. Lago and Ms. Wang; and congratulations on your nominations. If confirmed, the candidates before us will play a key role in the oversight and operation of the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration – or ITA. The ATI plays an important role in promoting market access and remedying unfair trade practices. Both functions are essential to American prosperity.

“For example, Hamilton Manufacturing in Twin Falls, Idaho, has successfully used ITA’s export promotion services to find new partners in Chile. There are many other businesses in Idaho and across the country that can benefit from such assistance.

“Ms. Lago, I look forward to hearing your perspective today on how ITA can expand export opportunities for American farmers, businesses and workers. In terms of unfair trade practices , our industries must be able to compete on a level playing field, including through the use of remedies under our anti-dumping and countervailing laws, where appropriate.

“This is especially important at this time as China is spending record amounts on industrial subsidies. Ms. Wang, I hope you will share your ideas on how the ITA can effectively administer trade remedy laws.

“I remind both candidates that the success of ITA in its mission depends on a strong partnership with Congress. This is true not only because Congress has authority over trade policy under our Constitution, but because Members are in the best position to understand the needs of our constituents. I hope the candidates today will confirm that they would consult closely with this committee if they were confirmed.

“I look forward to hearing from the nominees and their answers to questions.
